About La Fortuna
La Fortuna is a small town in Costa Rica and located northwest of the capital, San José. This colourful town is known as a gateway to the Arenal Volcano National Park, which includes two volcanoes. The Arenal Volcano is still active and is laced with lava flows. The thermal Tabacón River is dotted with hot springs while the dormant Chato Volcano has a crater lake and rainforest trails.
La Fortuna has become one of the top touristic spots in Costa Rica with people flocking to this area in search of breathtaking night skies, flowing lava and naturalistic wonders.
One of the favourite day trip destinations is La Fortuna Waterfall. With a drop of 75 meters and about 5.5 km outside of the town of La Fortuna, it makes for a great excursion. The admission is $15 USD and the hike down is a short but arduous one, along a staircase carved into the hillside. Once you arrive you can reward yourself with a swim in the stream and small rapids below the falls. The waterfall opens daily from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.
