Korcula - A treasure trove

Sailing into Korcula’s harbour inspires a thirst of adventure for the island’s best kept secrets.

Known as ‘little Dubrovnik’, Korcula’s citadel juts proudly into the Adriatic. Accessible by land from the south is a grand stair way leading to the town’s gate. Looming overhead is a fortified tower that has been standing guard since the 14th century. From here, the passageway arcs down the town’s spine with narrow laneways branching off on either side.

St Mark’s Cathedral lies at the town’s heart made of stone. Take the time to appreciate the intricate detail of mythical figures on the Gothic Renaissance facade. Another exciting discovery is the residence said to have once housed the most famous of world explorers, Marco Polo. Whether fact or fiction, a wonderful day awaits wandering through the town and pondering over its tales.

Circumnavigate the citadel to drink in aquatic views and fresh salt air. Some of the best views for consumption are along the eastern edge where restaurants and bars line the promenade. Not for the faint of heart is Massismo Cocktail Bar, which sits atop a tower and is only accessible by ladder. Alternatively, keep your feet firmly on the ground at a table for two and enjoy a glass of Korcula’s famous white wine.

Tradition is alive and kicking on Korčula. Many of the island's vineyards have been passed down from one generation to the next using traditional terracing techniques. The highly sought after wine, known as Grk, is unique in its taste as are the vines which require other grape varieties for fertilisation. Other age old traditions centre around folk music and sword dances, with ceremonies taking place during the summer months.

Visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to bathing. At the base of the town’s walls are a number of stair rails that lead into the sea. Some of the most popular beaches, particularly among families, are the rare sandy beaches of Lumbarda and Pržina. The beaches are relaxed and secluded with a rustic mediterranean backdrop of pine forest and vineyards. Nearby is the remote eastern point of Raznjic, ideal for snorkelling.

Dig a little deeper and find even more rewards of an island that is as hospitable as it is beautiful.
